dairy cows

2018-19

In my practice of photographing and painting dairy cows, I examine questions related to denial, submissiveness, exploitation, productivity, motherhood and more. Cows take on multiple cultural connotations, from the dairy farm as emblematic of the Zionist agricultural movement in Israel, via the red cow in Judaism or holy cows in India and through slurs to depict women such as "fat cow". Cows are a metaphor for the manner in which our productivity-driven society perceives of and treats human beings and animals alike.
How much freedom of choice do we really have in our daily toil, and how much we, and in particular women, are expected by society to sacrifice in order to satisfy the wants of others?
