Unfurled Folds
A trio show where I weave symbols of my indistinct childhood memories from South Africa into my own colorful designs reminiscent of African wax fabric.
Binyamin gallery, 2023. Curator: Sigal Manor-Banga
My memories resonate with the vibrant African fabrics of my childhood. In this body of works, I examine the history and iconography of classic and modern African cloth with its unique and colorful ornament behind which lurks the anguish of colonialism. I invent my own patterns, an autobiographic iconography based on childhood memories and personal traumas. I paint each line and image, intensive crafting which is diametrically opposite to practices of industrial cloth printing. The color seeps into the Xuan paper on which I work, its tactility akin to fabric. During this transformation, the pattern I devised is distorted and obscured behind black ink stains, faded and hidden like my memories.
